Anthony Hecht

(b. 1923)

Born in New York City, Hecht served in the army during WWII in Europe, and helped to liberate concentration camps during his service. The experience moved him deeply, and Hecht went on to write about the Holocaust in many of his poems. Unlike other poets addressing the subject, Hecht chose to maintain a classical style in these poems, despite the surreal quality of the Holocaust.
